BU Re-Examining Mascot Name Over 'Gone With The Wind' Connection

The Boston University Terriers' main terrier goes by the name "Rhett," after the character in "Gone With The Wind." Therein lies the issue.

BOSTON — The Boston University mascot appears safe, but the name of that mascot may not be. School officials are examining whether it is appropriate to keep the Boston University Terriers' "Rhett."

The mascot was named after Clark Gable's character in "Gone With The Wind." In the movie, Rhett is in love with Scarlett. As it turns out, scarlet is the university's color.

As it also turns, out, the Hollywood classic has been scrutinized of late for its racist themes.

"Despite this seemingly cute connection between the movie and our mascot’s name, the fact is that the movie’s portrayal of the American Civil War, postwar reconstruction, and slavery is offensive," BU President Robert Brown said in a statement. "And it is reasonable for people to question why, at a university founded by abolitionists, we have a mascot nicknamed for a character in a film whose racist depictions are completely at odds with our own tradition."

The Terrier mascot was chosen in 1922. Brown said it is "less easy to pinpoint" when "Rhett" became common.

A committee is looking into what to do with the "Rhett" name. A decision is expected in October.

"Gone With The Wind" was temporarily removed last month from HBO's streaming service. It has since returned with a disclaimer.
