Commuters Could Soon Snag A Six-Pack At South Station

BOSTON — Wishing for a bottle to bring home but don't want to make the extra stop at a liquor store? South Station may have the perfect solution soon.

Land of Beer, which runs an alcohol-selling kiosk inside New York's Penn Station, wants to open a similar spot in South Station near the commuter rail waiting area. The Boston Licensing Board is set to put the store's future to a vote Thursday.

Leather District residents and Transit Police voiced fears that opening such a store would increase public drunkenness, Universal Hub reported, but the Land of Beer's attorney Marci Costa said the company had measures in mind to keep concerns to a minimum.

All the bottles and cans for sale at the kiosk will be behind the counter and prices will be spiked to discourage brown-bagging. Costa said a bottle of wine that might cost around $13 elsewhere will go for around $19 at Land of Beer.
