Construction Resumes For Government Center Garage, Altering Commute

Street closures around Government Center will be a headache for commuters who use Congress Street, Sudbury Street, and Storrow Drive.

BOSTON — Months after pausing the project that left a demolition worker dead due to a partial collapse, workers in Boston resume construction on the Government Center Parking garage - and the commute for some could be greatly affected.

A section of Congress Street that runs under the parking garage will be closed from New Chardon to Sudbury Street from now until Sept. 5 while crews continue to dismantle the garage to make way for new luxury apartments.

Sudbury Street - normally a one-way, will temporarily become a two-way street to help alleviate traffic, but delays in the area are still expected to be hefty.

As if the traffic in the area wasn't going to be bad enough, part of Storrow Drive will also be closed while crews work on the street lights Monday. The left lane from Revere Street to Longfellow Bridge will be blocked off at least through Tuesday, officials said.

The Government Center Parking Garage project paused after Peter Monsini, 51, of Easton, was killed inside a construction vehicle when the floor gave way from under him back in March. As the floor was collapsing, Monsini was still inside the vehicle as it went over the side of the parking garage and fell nine stories.
