BOSTON — David Ortiz's 2019 shooting was the result of an assassination attempt sanctioned by a notorious drug kingpin, according to findings from former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis reported by The Boston Globe.

Davis, who was hired by Ortiz to get to the bottom of the shooting that nearly took the Red Sox star's life in his home country of the Dominican Republic, first revealed his findings to Globe investigative reporter Bob Hohler.

The findings run counter to the narrative put forth by Dominican authorities, who at first said Ortiz was the subject of a mysterious attempt on his life before saying the shooter mistook Ortiz for someone else.

Davis said César 'The Abuser' Peralta felt disrespected by Ortiz — the two crossed paths multiple times, according to The Globe. Ortiz told the Globe he had nothing more than a casual relationship with the drug lord.

Peralta is currently held without bail in Puerto Rico on drug charges.
