Development Board Approves GE Headquarters Proposal, Winthrop Square Tower

Two major changes to Boston's skyline got the go-ahead from the Boston Planning & Development Agency Tuesday.

BOSTON, MA – Two major projects got the Boston Planning & Development Agency board's blessing Tuesday, paving the way for the next step in Millennium Partners' next big, downtown tower and for the General Electric Co.'s headquarters plan to proceed.

Meeting Tuesday, the board granted Millenium's Winthrop Square tower project "tentative designation status" in Boston's Financial District. The group behind Downtown Crossing's Millennium Tower is proposing a multi-story office and residential building anchored by a community "Great Hall" on the ground floor, at 115 Federal St.

The Winthrop Square project will next be reviewed under the Boston Zoning Code, will continue to receive community input and is expected to be reviewed by an Impact Advisory Group and the Boston Civic Design Commission.

The additional large-scale project granted approval was GE's development plan for its Fort Point headquarters, a $200 million project tied to an additional $50 million in philanthropic commitments to Boston communities, according to the BPDA.

The project site is made up of two existing buildings at 5 and 6 Necco Court, which GE will rehabilitate, in addition to adding a connecting glass lobby and construction a new, 12-story headquarters, among other features.
