Gas Leak Shuts Down Parts of Downtown Boston

The scene is being reopened to traffic.

BOSTON, MA — The area near City Hall downtown has been reopened to traffic after a gas leak caused closures.

The area in and around 10 Tremont Street was closed down as a precaution, just before 9 a.m. Monday morning.

The Boston Fire Department says it responded at 8 a.m. for a reported gas leak, after contractors accidentally struck a line.

It's prompted a flurry of activity near City Hall and the Government Center MBTA station, with helicopters overhead and firetrucks on-scene.

The buildings at 10 Tremont Street and at 40 Court Street were evacuated as a precaution, according to the fire department.

As of 9:25 a.m., fire officials said the gas company is on scene, and they are waiting for a work crew to shut off the gas. Once the gas line was shut down, firefighters vented the connected buildings and tested the air for quality, Boston Fire said.
