Kyzr Willis Mourned, Buried Thursday

The seven-year-old who drowned at a Southie beach has been laid to rest.

BOSTON, MA — Mourning family laid a little boy to rest Thursday, grieving an accidental death that's been called a "citywide tragedy."

Boston Police last week determined 7-year-old Kyzr Willis' death at South Boston city summer program was a drowning, an "unfortunate, tragic accident" with no foul play suspected.

News of his death emerged last week on Tuesday night. According to police, Willis' mother, Melissa, dropped him at the Curley Community Center-run summer program in the morning. That afternoon, after the kids emerged from a swim on Carson Beach, police believe the boy went back into the water unattended and drowned. His body was found after a mass search along the shoreline, through the surrounding neighborhood, and in the water.

The mayor, who moved quickly to introduce new safety standards across the city's summer programs, called the death a "terrible tragedy" last week.

"It's my hope and expectation as mayor that no family ever has to go through this type of loss. This is a tough day," he said, speaking the day after Willis was found. "It's very difficult to put in words."
