Massachusetts Coronavirus: Updated Town-By-Town Case Count

With state in the coronavirus surge, the Department of Public Health has updated case counts for the state's 351 communities.

Experts say the official case count released daily by the Department of Public Health is likely only a fraction of the cases in Massachusetts, in part because of a shortage of test kits.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health updated town-by-town data on the new coronavirus Wednesday.

Middlefield leapfrogged Chelsea as being the Massachusetts community with the highest rate of infection. With 89 cases, Middlefield in the western part of the state now has 19,618.25 cases per 100,000 residents. Chelsea has 1,447 confirmed coronavirus cases, or 3,841.8 per 100,000 residents.

The data, which is updated weekly, includes confirmed coronavirus for all 351 Massachusetts towns and cities, except for communities with populations under 50,000 and fewer than five cases. The department said the stipulation was designed to protect the privacy of patients in those towns and cities.
