MASSACHUSETTS — It's Friday, September 3. Here's what you should know this afternoon:

  • It's Labor Day weekend, and Saturday may be one of the nicest days of the summer, with a forecast calling for plenty of sun and highs in the mid-seventies in Massachusetts. Clouds move in on Sunday, and there's 30 percent chance of light rain Monday morning before the sun returns Monday afternoon.
  • Former Catholic Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was defrocked from the priesthood for sexual abuse, pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy during a wedding reception in Wellesley nearly 50 years ago.
  • David Patten, a Patriots Super Bowl champion, has died at the age of 47.

A Massachusetts couple were two of the four victims in a small plane crash in Connecticut Thursday.

Farmington police identified the couple as Courtney Haviland, 33, and her husband, William Shrauner, 32. The two pilots were also killed in the crash. The couple was traveling on a Cessna Citation 560X to Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo, NC.

Haviland was a pediatrician at North Shore Medical Center in Salem. She was also a member physician at Mass General Brigham. Shrauner practiced internal medicine at Brigham and Women in Boston.

Ex-priest pleads not guilty: Former Catholic Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was defrocked from the priesthood for sexual abuse, pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy during a wedding reception in Wellesley nearly 50 years ago in Dedham District Court Friday . This makes McCarrick, 91, a former archbishop of Washington, D.C., the highest-ranking Catholic official in the U.S. to face criminal charges in the clergy sex abuse scandal.

Body found on Cape Cod street: A body was found a body lying on a Centerville street, according to Barnstable police. Officer Mark Mellyn told the Cape Cod Times the body was found around 4:15 a.m., Friday on Wequaquet Lane. Police closed Wequaquet Lane between Phinney's Lane and Route 28 for several hours Friday morning, while officers investigated. It has since reopened.

Former Patriots player dead at 47: David Patten, a Patriots Super Bowl champion, has died at the age of 47. The State - a newspaper out of South Carolina where Patten lived, reported his passing early Friday, saying Patten was riding a motorcycle Thursday night and died after a collision, the Richland County coroner confirmed Friday morning.

Spa owner, workers accused of sex crimes: A Revere woman has been indicted on charges related to a sex trafficking operation she is accused of running through her day spa. Two of her employees are also accused of sexually assaulting clients who were seeking massages. Geralda De Matos Garland, 57, was charged with two counts of trafficking of persons for sexual servitude and one count each of keeping a house of ill fame and money laundering. The state attorney general's office said Garland's business, Crystal's Day Spa, was a front for her "profitable and organized criminal enterprise."
