The HUB is a daily newsletter designed for what you want — to be caught up on the most interesting, important news in 5 minutes or less. It's a little bit of this, a little bit of that, but if there's something you want more or less of, email me at mike.carraggi@patch.com.

Today is Wednesday, July 14. Let's get started.

The pandemic may or may not be "over," but its effects on the state's workforce and economy could be felt for decades.

A report by McKinsey & Co. commissioned by Gov. Charlie Baker's administration was all the talk after it dropped Tuesday, outlining some of the seismic changes the Commonwealth could see in coming years.

You can read the entire report here, but here are the primary takeaways it noted:

  • "First, changing ways of working – such as hybrid and remote work – may shift the center of gravity away from the urban core, further reinforced if business travel decreases."
  • "Second, the pace, scale, and breadth of reskilling needed for job transitions must be much greater than before the pandemic; creating the workforce of the future will require extensive, thoughtful preparation."
  • "Third, the pandemic has already exacerbated pre-existing inequities for many and as we look ahead the future of work will not be experienced equally across the Commonwealth."
  • "Fourth, the risk of future job growth moving outside Massachusetts is rising due to the high costs of living and doing business in the state."

It's a pretty thorough report, so different outlets are pulling different things from it. Check out Jon Chesto at The Boston Globe, Greg Ryan at Boston Business Journal, Katie Lannan at State House News via WBUR and Lily Robinson at CommonWealth.

It was bound to happen eventually. Jon Santiago, a state representative and emergency room doctor who joined the Boston mayoral race in February, announced he's dropping out. Santiago, who would have been the city's first Latino mayor, didn't have the support or resources to keep up with the rest of the historically diverse field. He said he'll be throwing his support behind a woman of color — which means anyone but John Barros, the city's former economic chief who has also polled poorly. Matt Stout at The Boston Globe has more.

We love a good casting call. A casting company for a Whitney Houston biopic is looking for thousands of extras in the Greater Boston Area, reports Marie Szaniszlo at The Boston Herald. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" will be shot from Aug. 9 to Nov.5 in Quincy and the Boston area.

Police departments are reforming all around the state. GBH's Mary Blake had a conversation with Northeastern law professor Daniel Medwed on how tangible some of that change has been in departments from Springfield to Lynn.

A national look

What I'm reading today: I covered Pat Connaughton when I worked at The Boston Globe. Now the Arlington native and St. John's Prep grad is a major part of the Milwaukee Bucks' pursuit of an NBA championship, says Dan Shaughnessy.
