BOSTON — Would you still take a Lyft or Uber from the airport if it cost a lot more and you had to walk a while to get to them? In an effort to ease congestion at Logan Airport, Massport officials are proposing higher fees and new procedures for Uber and Lyft passengers.

"These major initiatives are expected to eliminate up to 3 million vehicle trips off the roads, and double [Logan Express] ridership while improving the customer experience and reducing emissions," reads an announcement on the Massport website.

Currently, if you take a ride share to or from the airport you get charged an extra $3.25. The proposal would raise the fee to $5 per pickup — an increase of 54 percent. If you take a pool ride, the fee would be $2.50.

Massport also proposed moving rideshare drop-off and pickup spots to the central parking garage, which is accessible by shuttle or a short walk.

"By moving these operations into the garage, it will be easier for a TNC driver dropping off a passenger to match with a waiting pick up passenger," Massport said in a statement. "Passengers will have a shorter wait time to be picked up, in a weather-protected area (unlike the current set up), and will have the option to take a Massport-discounted shared ride, such as uberPOOL and Lyft Line."

There's more: Massport is proposing policies in an effort to up ridership on Logan Express buses from downtown and suburban locations, including lowering the price of the ticket.

Look for a vote next month among the board members.
