MBTA Steps Up Security After NYC Subway Shooting
In response to events in New York City, Boston MBTA officials say they are increasing security measures.

BOSTON — Transit police are taking serious measures to help make sure Boston commuters are safe following a shooting in a New York subway station Tuesday morning.
MBTA Transit Police say they are increasing the number of uniformed officers on the system after at least ten people were shot and explosives were found by emergency responders at Sunset Park station in Brooklyn, New York around 8:30 a.m.
A man wearing a gas mask and an orange vest was seen fleeing the scene, police said, but so far no arrests have been made.

Schools in the area are on lockdown, and images circulating on Twitter show blood smeared on the platform, a man lying on the platform, and screaming commuters fleeing a train with smoke spewing from the open doors.
"At this time, there is no evidence, credible or otherwise, to suggest the MBTA system is a potential target," a spokesperson from the MBTA said. "The Transit Police employ a multi layered approach to safeguarding the MBTA system. To reassure our riders, the Transit Police Department has deployed additional Explosive Detection K9 teams to perform protective sweeps. There are also actions police will employ that will not be visible to the riding public."

"We continue to monitor intelligence related to the subway shooting in NYC in coordination with our federal and local law enforcement partners," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement. "At this time there is no known threat or nexus to Massachusetts. As more information is developed we will provide updates as appropriate."
