More Than 15 Arrested On Boston-Area Beaches This Weekend: Police

After some areas of the state saw record heat this weekend and others didn't, thousands flocked to the beach with some spurring trouble.

Both Carson Beach in South Boston and Revere Beach in Revere were the two hot spots for trouble over the weekend, according to the State Police Association of Massachusetts.

BOSTON — As the temps skyrocketed over the weekend, people across Massachusetts flocked to the coastline in attempts to cool down or have a taste of some early summer fun - but police say some people took advantage of the nice weather, and 17 ended up facing charges.

Though Boston didn't have quite the record-breaking heat that was predicted over the weekend due to a sea breeze, Worcester tied the record both Saturday and Sunday with highs of 88 and 90 respectively.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu had even prepared to declare a heat emergency due to the high-temperature records that were set to be broken in the city this weekend, but never ended up happening. Boston only hit a high of 71 on Saturday and 89 on Sunday.

Still - those numbers didn't stop Bostonians from getting their first taste of summer. Both Carson Beach in South Boston and Revere Beach in Revere were the two hot spots for trouble over the weekend, according to the State Police Association of Massachusetts.

Four people were arrested on Carson Beach Sunday on assault and battery and disorderly conduct charges and five were arrested on similar charges as thousands swarmed the Boston beach.

On Carson Beach, police say fights broke out on the sand while other beachgoers set off fireworks, others set a property on fire and some even attacked State Troopers while they were making arrests.

"Scenarios like these are difficult to handle, but especially so with a Department that has critically low staffing levels," the State Police Association of Massachusetts said.

On Revere Beach, a total of seven people ranging from juvenile to 61-years-old were arrested on various charges. Some of these charges included OUI, disorderly conduct, and domestic violence. Snapchat video uploaded to Twitter highlights some of these incidents.

"Going to the beach with family, friends and loved ones is a longtime treasured New England tradition," the State Police Association of Massachusetts said in a statement. "Everyone should be able to enjoy the beautiful weather and beachfront at DCR properties the Commonwealth has to offer."

Of the 17 people arrested throughout the weekend, nine were under age 18.

If you missed a beach opportunity last weekend and are looking to try again during Memorial Day weekend, you may be in luck. Dry conditions coupled with heat and humidity are expected to hit Saturday and Sunday this week with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s, according to AccuWeather.

The beginning of this week, however, is expected to be much milder than the Sunday scorcher most people across the Bay State felt.

With temps expected to remain in the mid-70s all week, the only issue leading up to Memorial Day weekend will likely be the humidity, according to AccuWeather.

The next few days will bring a more comfortable feel with lower humidity before it starts to pick up by Thursday. As a cold front sweeps in through Friday, scattered showers are expected by AccuWeather.
