New Balance Pro-Trump Comments Spark Backlash

People are trashing shoes from New Balance because they think the Boston company endorsed Donald Trump. (Spoiler: It didn't.)

BOSTON, MA — New Balance is facing a public backlash Thursday after an out-of-context quote convinced some that the Boston company had endorsed President-elect Donald Trump.

Social media has since been populated by images of people throwing out or even apparently burning their sneakers from the company. However, a spokesperson has said the widely shared quote isn't what they think.

New Balance Vice President of Public Affairs Matt LeBretton spoke with a Wall Street Journal reporter about trade. The company has long opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Trump has vowed to scrap in the first 100 days of his presidency.

A popular sneaker blog threw up a headline, apparently based on this tweet, claiming NB had endorsed Trump. The blog's fans, well... they ran with it:

People are throwing out their sneakers after New Balance made a statement supporting Trump. Sneaker fans are running away from New Balance after it publicly backed President-elect Donald Trump. The Boston-based company has criticized the Obama administration because of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in the past and Trump has already announced he wold withdrawal from the TPP during his first 100 days in office. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal's Sara Germano, New Balance said that "Obama turned a deaf ear to us and frankly with President-elect Trump we feel things are going to move in the right direction." After Sole Collector, a sneaker-focused news site, wrote about the company's statements, sneaker fans responded to the article with images of their sneakers in the trash. Some even showed how they were destroying the shoes by lighting them on fire. #Covrant #news #music #art #fashion #lifestyle #social #media #contemporary #minimalist #visuals #current #modern #collectors #succinct #blogger #influence #solecollector #newbalance #trump #donaldtrump #america #whitehouse #president
