Sen. Ed Markey Releases Years Of Tax Returns, Challenges Kennedy

BOSTON — Sen. Edward Markey released his tax returns Friday and challenged Rep. Joe Kennedy, who is vying for Markey's seat in the fall elections, to do the same.

Throughout the past seven years, Markey has made about $178,317 each year, the bulk from his congressional salary, according to copies of his tax returns going back to 2013. That year as Markey was running he released his tax returns going back eight years.

The 2019 return shows he earned $140,458 in salary from the Senate, and reported $34,726 in Social Security benefits. He filed separately from his wife Susan Blumenthal. In 2018 the returns show he earned $140,239 in salary from the Senate.

Kennedy has said he plans to release his tax returns for the years he has been in office in the coming days, according to his campaign. And in the race to take Kennedy's seat in Congress, a handful of the nine candidates there have already released tax documents.

The issue of financial disclosure among politicians, specifically whether presidents should be required to release their tax returns, has been under a spotlight the past four years as President Donald Trump has yet to share his.
