BOSTON — A student and a teacher were shot in the parking lot outside a Boston school Tuesday night, police said.

As of Wednesday morning, law enforcement is still searching for a suspect who police say shot at the two around 5:40 p.m. then fled the scene near TechBoston Academy in Dorchester.

The shooting victims, a 31-year-old teacher identified as Khelmon Bethel, and a 17-year-old student were both taken to a hospital for injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

Boston Superintendent in-chief Gregory Long said that an initial investigation indicated that the student and teacher were in the parking lot preparing for a school event when someone opened fire on them.

"Obviously, this is a very concerning and disturbing set of circumstances," Long said in a statement. "School is supposed to be a safe haven for our students and our teachers, not a place where they’re subjected to brazen and random acts of violence."

Long said he could not comment on a possible suspect in the shooting, or say if the victims were targeted or not.

Classes remain canceled, but counselors are available at the school, located at 9 Peacevale Road for all students and staff, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said.

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made, Boston police said.

"This is an unacceptable situation, and we are going to do everything it takes to ensure that each one of our schools, our parks, our communities are the safe, welcoming homes that all of our students deserve," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.

This is the second disturbing incident to take place at TechBoston Academy this week. On Monday, Ernest Logan, 21, was placed on leave from his job as a technician at the school after he was accused of asking a student to send him sexual photos.
