"I write in response to your letter of August 13, 2025, threatening to prosecute local officials and illegally withhold federal grants and contracts unless the City of Boston agrees to actively participate in mass deportations," Wu's letter said.

"On behalf of the people of Boston, and in solidarity with the cities and communities targeted by this federal administration for our refusal to bow down to unconstitutional threats and unlawful coercion, we affirm our support for each other and for our democracy," Wu said in the letter. "Boston will never back down from being a beacon of freedom, and a home for everyone."

Politico said the planned move on Boston is "part of a broader strategy that could define the next chapter in the White House’s efforts to carry out the president’s promise to deport millions of undocumented immigrants," and noted the increased immigration enforcement "could spur clashes with local officials and residents, leading the president to deploy the National Guard to protect ICE officers."
