Check the Height of Your Rental Truck, And Other Move-In Day Guidelines

Move-in Day is coming, Boston.

Massachusetts State Police are pleading with students and other movers to check the height of their vehicles against their route before driving into Boston.

The state agency posted a picture on social media Tuesday of an over-height moving truck wedged under the Longfellow Bridge overpass eastbound on Storrow Drive.

"Watch for signs and electronic message boards. GPS systems may not adequately warn you of height restrictions," State Police warned via Tweet.

Courtesy the Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation website, here's a rundown of the height restrictions you should know (these are the maximum heights allowed on each roadway):

  • Mass. Turnpike: 13 feet 6 inches
  • Ted Williams Tunnel: 13 feet 6 inches
  • Callahan Tunnel: 12 feet 6 inches
  • Sumner Tunnel: 12 feet 6 inches
  • O'Neill Tunnel (I-93): 13 feet 6 inches
  • CANA (City Square) Tunnels: 13 feet 6 inches
  • Other Locations Not Listed: 13 feet 6 inches

And in Boston and Cambridge, it wouldn't hurt to be aware of the Longfellow Bridge closure detours and schedule, which MassDOT keeps track of here.

Also, perhaps most importantly here, do not take your moving trucks on Storrow Drive. The signs should tell you that, but it seems some people do not notice.

Additionally, in advance of Move-In Day, the state Dept. of Conservation and Recreation will be putting out "no parking signs" and "permitted drop-off only" signs where necessary, erecting cones and barricades for Move-In Day, and closing the left lane along Park Drive from Aggasiz Road to Kilmarnock Street from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Move-In Day to accommodate pick-up and drop-off of students and belongings.

State officials are also reaching out students, educational institutions, GPS companies, and box rental truck companies regarding height restrictions and other pertinent information. State agencies will coordinate additional signage in Greater Boston and social media outreach to remind the general public of the height restrictions.
