9/11 Patriots Day Service In Braintree

The Braintree Fire Department will host the annual remembrance ceremony on Wednesday. Here's what to know.

BRAINTREE, MA — Sometimes called Patriots Day, Sept. 11 has become a national day of remembrance honoring the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In Braintree, a remembrance service will be held at the Braintree Fire Department Headquarters, 1 Union Place, starting at 8:30 a.m.

“On this 23rd anniversary of the devastating attacks on our country, we pause to remember our own residents and first responders whose lives were never the same after the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Events like today, where we can all come together in remembrance, serve as a powerful reminder of our collective ability to be a community of light in times of darkness,” said Mayor Erin Joyce.

As part of the ceremony, Joyce will offer words of remembrance and the Braintree High School concert choir will perform.

Americans felt a collective trauma as first one and then another plane flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. As the truth dawned on people watching from their TVs that America was under attack, another plane took aim at the Pentagon. A fourth was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania in a final act of heroism by passengers who realized their flight had been hijacked.
