Braintree Couple Joins Immigration Lawsuit Against Trump

Deng Gao says he's scared that he'll be arrested and deported if he shows up to an interview to prove that he's married to an American.

BRAINTREE, MA — Count a Braintree couple as part of a class-action lawsuit against the Trump Administration.

Deng Gao and Amy Chen are one of five couples in the lawsuit which claims that the administration is illegally detaining immigrants married to American citizens as they are seeking legal immigration status.

Gao wrote in an affidavit that he lives with his wife and four children and is scared that if appears at an interview to confirm that he's married to an American citizen, he'll be arrested or deported.

Gao and the other plaintiffs are represented by the American Civil Liberities Union. Steve Brown, executive director of the ACLU of Rhode Island, told the Associated Press that authorities are targeting families who are trying to adjust their immigration status.

The Braintree resident has been living in America since 2005 and has been married to his wife since 2016. He wrote that he works two jobs to support his family and worries what would happen if he was forced to return to his home country of China.

"Without me, I have no idea how Amy would take care of a new-born, two young children, and my son. There is no way she could pay the bills and take care of our kids. Without my income, we couldn't afford our mortgage and would likely lose our new home," he wrote.

The case remains pending in U.S. District Court in Boston.
