Braintree Kindergarten Taking Shape for Next Year

Monatiquot is currently being used by Montessori and full-day kindergarten.

All half-day kindergarteners in Braintree next year will attend the new kindergarten center at Monatiquot School except some students who will go to their home schools of Hollis, Flaherty and Morrison.

In a letter to parents last week, Superintendent Dr. Maureen Murray outlined some of the details taking shape for kindergarten in 2014-2015. For instance, full-day kindergarten will primarily be at Monatiquot but may also include classes at Braintree High School.

Monatiquot will have an assigned school administrator and will have a school nurse, Dr. Murray said.

The full-day kindergarten lottery will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Colbert Administration Building at 348 Pond St. The fee is $3,000 for the year per student, with a discount for those eligible for free or reduced priced lunch.

The Braintree School Committee last Monday night unanimously approved opening Monatiquot School as a kindergarten center next year.

Monatiquot currently houses two full-day kindergarten classrooms in the portion of the Brow Avenue building not used by Meeting House Montessori, which has a lease ending June 30, 2014.

Completely re-opening the former Braintree elementary school will add 12 classrooms.

Students must be five years old by Aug. 31, 2014 to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten. Parents should register their children at their home school by Jan. 10, 2014.
