BRAINTREE, MA — Mayor Erin V. Joyce has announced the appointment of Acting Chief Frederick T. Viola to serve officially as Braintree’s next Fire Chief.

Born and raised in Braintree, Viola began his career with Braintree as a Firefighter/EMT in 1991 and has progressively advanced through the ranks, holding various positions, including Designated Infectious Disease Control Officer, Public Information Officer (PIO), Medical Coordinator, Fire Lieutenant, and, most recently, Acting Fire Chief.

"His extensive experience in emergency services has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead effectively in high-pressure situations," city officials said, in a news release.

In addition to his practical experience, Viola has pursued executive-level leadership training and certifications from prestigious national institutions. Notably, he received his Chief Fire Officer certification from the Edward J. Collins Center for Public Management in January 2025.

“Over the past year, his leadership in an interim capacity not only helped maintain stability within the department but also enabled the successful rebuilding of the fire department’s budget and the creation of a strong team to support those ongoing efforts,” said Mayor Joyce. “I am confident that Chief Viola will continue to move the Braintree Fire Department forward in the years ahead.”
