Braintree Students Get Extra Assignments Instead Of Snow Days

The work will allow Ross Elementary School and South Middle School to have their last day of school on June 25.

BRAINTREE, MA — Instead of making up snow days, students at South Middle School and Ross Elementary will receive extra homework instead.

The school committee this week approved the alternative plan. The vote allows all Braintree Public Schools to hold their last day on June 25, pending any surprise off days. Without the vote, Ross Elementary would have had their last day on June 27 while South Middle, with three extra days past June 25, would have needed some creative thinking since they would unable to end classes before July 1.

The outside thinking was needed as the school district is legally obligated to have 180 days of learning. During the winter of 2015, school officials assigned a projected on Braintree's 375th anniversary to take the place of a day of school after the state denied a waiver that would have exempted the school district from a day of class.

Assistant Superintendent James Lee said at a past school committee meeting that schools in Wakefield and Burlington are already doing learn anywhere projects to avoid making up snow days.

The extra work will be due May 23. Not completing the assignment will be treated like missing class, according to Superintendent Frank Hackett.
