Car B&E Suspect Chased Through Grocery Store, Arrested Nearby

The victim of a car break-in chased the suspect through a Shaw's store on Friday.

A Dorchester man was arrested last week after he was caught in the act of breaking into a vehicle at the Ivory Street Dunkin Donuts. The man was chased through a grocery store, where he ditched a crack pipe, before police caught and arrested him.

Michael P. Sargent, 34, was charged with charged with breaking and entering in the Daytime, receiving stolen property and possession of a Class B substance.

The man and his son exited Dunkin Donuts on the afternoon of July 26, when they noticed Sargent inside their vehicle, according to a release from Braintree Police Chief Russell Jenkins. The victim's son chased Sargent as he fled toward Cardi's, across Pearl Street and into Shaw's.

The two ran through the grocery store and exited a store room emergency door. Officer Paul Hamilton located Sargent exiting South Shore Bank with the victim’s son close behind.

Sargent was placed under arrest. During the arrest, the officer found property that was taken from a vehicle in South Braintree Square on Wednesday, July 24. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle at Dunkin Donuts.

After the chase, the son told officers Sargent hid something in Shaw's.

"The aisle was searched and a cigarette pack containing a crack pipe with crack residue was located," said Jenkins.
