Dueling Braintree Beer Gardens To Open This Fall

Beer garden licenses for Widowmaker Brewing and the owner of Kay's Bottles and Cans were approved this week by the town's licensing board.

BRAINTREE, MA — Looking to have a beer outside this fall once the summer heat and, hopefully, storms break? In Braintree, residents will have two new options.

Braintree's Board of License Commissioners this week approved licenses for two parties — Widowmaker Brewing and Kay Young, who owns Kay's Bottles and Cans — to open beer gardens this fall.

Widowmaker Brewing's Braintree Beer Garden is set to open on Sept. 1 through Oct. 29 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 525 John Mahar Highway. Hours of operation will be 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The brewery has operated a beer garden in Quincy for the past five years, but will host one in Braintree for the first time.

This, alternatively, will be the fifth year operating in Braintree for the second beer garden approved at the recent meeting.

Kay Young's petition will allow a beer garden at 2015 Washington St. — the location used by the Norfolk County Sheriff's Department — on Saturdays starting on Sept. 9 through Oct. 28. Hours for this beer garden are 12 to 5 p.m.

The beer garden has had three different locations over the past five years, but will operate at the Washington Street space for the second consecutive year.
