Fire Alarm Leads Police to 116-Pound Marijuana Seizure

The following information was supplied by the Braintree Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

While responding to a fire alarm at a Lenox Farms condo, firefighters discovered approximately 116 pounds of marijuana, leading Braintree police to arrest a Quincy man and woman for drug trafficking.

Firefighters went to the apartment just before 2:30 p.m. Monday and found water pouring out from under the garage door, Police Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

The marijuana was found in the master bedroom by firefighters checking the apartment. No one was inside and the place lacked any clothing in closets, kitchen utensils or food and had little in the way of furniture, Jenkins said.

While going through the apartment after receiving a search warrant, police confronted an Asian couple who drove up to the garage door in a 2010 BMW 335i and allegedly attempted to open the garage door with a remote.

Along with the marijuana, police seized two heat seal machines and baggies and a large scale.

Dang L. Huynh, 32, and Mary Mei Chan, 31, both of Quincy, were charged with trafficking in marijuana and conspiracy to violate the Controlled Substances Act.

The leaseholder on the apartment, a 19-year-old Boston woman, was not present and will be summonsed for trafficking in marijuana. Her name was withheld because she has not yet been charged, Jenkins said.
