Gun Accidentally Fired At Sgt. Michael Chesna's Funeral: Report

Chesna was laid to rest July 20 at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

BRAINTREE, MA — Two officers avoided serious injuries after a gun went off following the burial of Weymouth Sgt. Michael Chesna at Blue Hill Cemetery.

A police report obtained by various outlets indicates that Cranston Police Sgt. Michael Patnaud was changing out of his honor guard when his gun fell out of his holster and fired as Patnaud tried to catch it. WBZ was the first to report of the accident.

The shot sent part of the pavement into the air and struck two officers. Neither suffered serious injuries and refused medical treatment, according to WFXT.

Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist said the incident is under investigation and Sgt. Patnaud remains on duty because no one was seriously injured.

Chesna died July 15 while responding to a call for a hit and run. He was allegedly shot by Emanuel Lopes, who is currently being held without bail.
