Nostalgic Smells Of Cinnabon Now Filling This MA Mall

Plus: The same mall has opened an "AI-governed" cafe that replaces a traditional barista with a robot.

BRAINTREE, MA — South Shore Plaza's two newest openings fall on opposite ends of the spectrum in one interesting way.

On the one hand, you have Cinnabon, the cinnamon bun purveyor that offers a sweet treat and a massive dose of nostalgia for those who grew up within 50 miles of a shopping mall. It's a true American throwback.

On the other hand is Robocafe, a potential look into a future where a human barista is no longer needed. Instead, the business offers "barista brewed coffee, with a dash of Artificial Intelligence."

In short, customers customize their coffee through an app before watching a robot arm craft their beverage.

The cafe is currently open at Boston Children's Hospital, Mass General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center, with the new location at South Shore Plaza serving as its first in a shopping center, officials said.
