WATCH: MBTA Releases Video of Runaway Red Line Train
The MBTA released surveillance video of a Red Line train that blew through four stops without a driver this December.

Boston, MA - The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has released video of a Red Line train that left Braintree without an operator this December, blowing through four stations before being stopped.
As Patch reported at the time, the inbound train left the Braintree station without anyone at the helm, after the operator manipulated the controls before getting off the train to fix a signaling issue. The operator was injured in the process, and later fired from his post.
Operations personnel were able to halt the train by de-powering the third rail. The train had passed the North Quincy station by the time it came to a halt. Workers for the T were able to board the train and take it to JFK/UMass, where passengers were able to leave the train before it was taken out of service.

The MBTA released surveillance video from the incident Friday, along with a statement from MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola, as published on Boston's CBS News (below).
"While the MBTA is grateful that no one was harmed, the safety of our passengers and employees is something we take very seriously. Within a week of the incident, the MBTA acted quickly, implementing new procedures which require a supervisor be present when a train operator is granted permission to ‘bypass’ a faulty signal. The MBTA also issued a special order to all train operators, reinforcing the policies against tampering with safety equipment, and reminding them of the disciplinary action for such violations."
