BROOKLINE, MA — With Tuesday's sunny weather enticing folks to get outside, Bluebikes riders in the Greater Boston area pedaled into the record books, the company announced. Bluebikes, the Boston are a bike ride share program, the riders took 10,035 trips, breaking 10,000 rides for the first time in a single day.

Bluebikes calculated that riders across Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville pedaled more than 13,000 miles, burning over 877,000 calories.

And the company expects ridership to go up as Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville are adding some 50 new stations and 1,000 new bikes to the system this year. The effort is supported by the sponsorship of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Each single trips cost about $2.50 a pop.

The Bostonbikes program was conceived in 2007 when the City of Boston decided to bring bike sharing to the Boston area, according to the program's website. The Metropolitan Area Planning Council joined the effort, leading the open bidding process that led to the selection of an operator for a regional bike share program. Soon after, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville joined. The program became Hubway and officially started in 2011.

Each year the program has been expanding both the number of days bikes are available and the number of stations where you can pick up a bike. This spring the company is expanding to Everett, too.
