BROOKLINE, MA — The fire department has updated its outdoor burning regulations ahead of the upcoming holiday season due to recent rainfall droughts.

Brookline is one of 22 Massachusetts municipalities that does not permit open burning under any circumstances. It is not allowed in fire pits, fire places, or chimneas.

“Brookline Fire would like to remind residents that although conditions have improved, and much-needed rain over the weekend brought a welcome range of 1 inch to almost 2.25 inches of precipitation in parts of the state, necessary precautions should still be taken to prevent outdoor fires from starting and spreading,” the department said in a statement.

On the heels of Thanksgiving and ahead of the remaining holiday season, the department also reminds residents to prevent seasonal cooking fires by ensuring their fire and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning, not leaving children alone in a room with a lit candle, and remaining home when something is cooking in an oven.
