Japanese Market To Open In Coolidge Corner's Former Gen Sou En

A Japanese market has announced plans to open and may include a little Gen Sou En in the old space.

BROOKLINE, MA —It looks like the former Gen Sou En location will be reincarnated as a Japanese specialty market that sells everything from snacks to tea and coffee and grocery items.

Maruichi, a Japanese market based out of Connecticut, offers sashimi grade fish, ramen, bento, sushi and bubble tea, according to its Facebook page. The business announced it plans to branch out and open up shop in Brookline in December or early next year —and it appears Gen Sou En, may yet be part of those plans.

According to the Facebook post the market will be made up of multiple shops, including the Japanese coffee shop Ogawa Coffee, Gen Sou En Tea House, Brooklyn Ramen and a sushi shop.

Gen Sou En opened in 299 Harvard Street in February 2018 in the space once occupied by the popular Panera Bread. But the high end tea house was beset by slow service and low customer volume, although customers gave largely good reviews when commenting on the food and beverages. In October 2018, it closed for a revamp and opened with a new concept, offering up dinner service. It closed abruptly earlier this year.

Patch has reached out to the company for comment.
