Search For Interim Superintendent Underway In Brookline
As Brookline's current interim superintendent prepares to step down, the town is looking for someone to lead the school district.

BROOKLINE, MA — The plan was to have a superintendent selected by the end of April. But the superintendent search that launched at the beginning of the year failed, according to school committee members.
And now, as Interim Superintendent Ben Lummis is set leave at the end of this school year, the district is also looking for a temporary superintendent.
On March 18, the School Committee announced plans to restart the search process and hire an interim superintendent for the 2020-21 academic year before reopening the search for a permanent superintendent in the fall.

The screening committee planned to begin review of applications on April 9, and interviews the week of April 13. The screening committee had two interviews on Monday, according to Helen Charlupski, who sits on the committee.
But it's not yet clear how many people applied. Only six candidates applied last year for interim superintendent. The committee expressed hope that more people would apply this round.

Lummis, who was the administrator for the schools, slid into the superintendent role at the beginning of this school year when former Superintendent Andrew Bott stepped down abruptly after three years at the helm. Lummis was set to be in position temporarily until a permanent superintendent is found.
Last year the Brookline School Committee decided to specifically not allow anyone who took the interim position to apply for the permanent position.
The superintendent would oversee a staff of approximately 1,600, supported by $115 million budget. The interim superintendent job description lists March 20 as the start date.
