Can you believe it’s time for the May Basket event again!  This is a great fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, and a great opportunity for donors to promote their business, group or organization.  It is a great opportunity for library visitors to take a chance, with tickets sold in strips of 5 for $5, and win a basket valued at a minimum of $25. We currently have over 2 dozen baskets promised, so I’m sure there will be a basket of interest to everyone.

Businesses, community groups and individuals are urged to create and donate May Baskets filled with appealing items worth $25 or more, to be delivered to the Library by April 22.  If you are planning to create a basket or would like more information, call 781 505-4990 or email Lori Hodgson at lhodgson@burlmass.org.

Baskets will be displayed at the library throughout the month of May and tickets will be sold from May 1 until May 30.  The drawing will take place at a fun-filled event on Thursday evening, May 30.

After School Story and Craft - Monday, April 22 at 3:45 p.m.

Stormwater Display

The Burlington Public Library is partnering with the Conservation Department to bring you an informative stormwater display.  You will find a storm drain and a rain barrel as well as resources for you to read and borrow on the second floor of the library.  These materials will help you learn more about water quality and what you can do to help reduce stormwater runoff.

Stormwater is the water from rain and snowmelt events that flows over land or impervious surfaces and does not percolate into the ground. This runoff enters our storm drain system and is discharged, without treatment, directly to our streams and wetlands. Stormwater is the most common cause of water pollution in the United States.  With effective management, water pollution and localized flooding from stormwater can be significantly reduced.

One of the ways in which you can help is to use a rain barrel to capture the runoff from your roof and store it for future use. Not only does this help to reduce stormwater runoff, it can help to reduce your water bills. When the warmer weather arrives, our gardens and flowers start to bloom, our lawns grow, and our pools need filling. Outdoor water usage can spike as much as 60% from watering needs during this time of year. Rain barrels can offset that usage, reducing cost for homeowners and helping the community to better manage its water supplies.

Burlington has partnered with the Great American Rain Barrel Company to get rain barrels at a huge discount. You can order a rain barrel for just $69 ( 40% discount).  To take advantage of this offer, orders must be placed by 5:00pm on May 31.  Barrels must be picked up at the Burlington Town Hall parking lot between 9:00am and 11:00am on June 8th. For more information, or to place your order, go to www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com, click onCommunity Programs” and then click on “Burlington.”  Please call the Burlington Conservation Department if you have any questions: 781.270.1655.
