According to PetMedic, the clinics are modeled after human urgent care and offer coordinated, convenient and compassionate veterinary care after regular business hours and on weekends for non-life-threatening conditions.

The clinics are designed to complement the work done by a family's regular veterinarian and alleviate the case overload at emergency animal hospitals, the company said.

PedMedic Urgent Care will be staffed by an experienced emergency medicine team and will include a modern surgical suite, laboratory, digital x-ray capabilities, ultrasound technology and other cutting-edge software, according to the company.

PetMedic said it does not perform routine services that are provided by family veterinary practices, like wellness visits. Nor will the clinics administer vaccinations.

"I have been a clinician in the Boston area for many years and have been fortunate to work with some of the best veterinary teams in our community. To be able to offer them an extra set of hands when they're overloaded while giving pet parents extra peace of mind is a winning combination for everyone. I am thankful for this exciting next chapter for PetMedic in Boston," said Dr. Nir Ben-Ari, founder and chief medical officer of PetMedic.

PetMedic allows pet owners to make same-day appointments online.
