BURLINGTON, MA — Police are investigating to see if a reported theft was related to the search for a potentially armed man near the Mills Pond Reservoir.

Woburn police alerted Burlington police around 1:15 p.m. that a Woburn resident reported seeing a suspicious man who possibly had a gun running through a backyard near the reservoir and Burlington town line.

Police from Burlington, Woburn and the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council searched the area, with officers going to the Marshall Simonds Middle School and Memorial Elementary School and bus routes during the search.

"We took extra precautions and sent officers to two nearby schools due to the time of day when this occurred, but at no time was the safety of students or staff in those schools believed to be at risk," said Deputy Chief Bob Kirchner.

During the search, Burlington police learned of a reported theft in the area. Police said a person from out of town met with two men about selling a dirt bike after communicating on Facebook. One of the men said he wanted to test drive the bike first, but he never returned, and the other man fled.
