BURLINGTON, MA — The man shot by police after they say he advanced on them with a knife Sunday night has died.

Paul Courtemanche, 42, succumbed to his injuries Monday, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Burlington Chief of Police Thomas Browne said.

Police responded to a 911 call at the Lord Baron Apartments shortly after noon Sunday from Courtemanche, who said he was having mental health issues, Ryan said. Courtemanche said he wasn't sure how he'd respond when police arrived.

Two officers got to the scene and were told to wait outside until more police came. While they were waiting, Courtemanche came out of the building with a knife and moved toward officers, Ryan said.

Courtemanche ignored commands to drop the weapon and ran toward officers, Ryan said. One of the officers shot Courtemanche with a less-than-lethal round, but it did not stop him. The other officer shot Courtemanche with his gun.
