Do You Agree or Disagree With The Boy Scouts of America's Decision to Exclude Gay Members?

Some Eagle Scouts are distancing themselves from the Boy Scouts of America.

The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest rank a boy scout can receive and is the crowning achievement of a scouting career.

On July 17, after a two year review, an 11-member committee of the Boy Scouts of America voted unanimously to uphold its policy of excluding members based on their sexuality. The policy includes adult leaders and scouts.

“The vast majority of the parents of youth we serve value their right to address issues of same-sex orientation within their family, with spiritual advisers, and at the appropriate time and in the right setting,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of America in a statement. “While a majority of our membership agrees with our policy, we fully understand that no single policy will accommodate the many diverse views among our membership or society.”

Some Eagle Scouts who disagree with the policy have returned their medals.

The website Boing Boing features letters from Eagle Scouts requesting that the executive board of Boy Scouts of America reconsider its policy against gays.

A Facebook group Eagle Scouts for Equality gives a deadline of Founder's Day 2013 to revoke the policy or revoke the rank of Eagle Scout from the members who have signed onto the Facebook group.
