Multi-Day, 32-Acre Brush Fire Extinguished Near Canton Reservoir

CANTON, MA — A 32-acre brush fire that burned for multiple days in the wooded area between the Canton Reservoir and Route 138 has been knocked down, according to the Canton Fire Department.
The fire was first reported at 1:24 p.m. Sunday by a person at the nearby Wampatuck Country Club.
Crews responded to find the fire covering three acres, officials said, adding that "Due to its remoteness, the brush fire did not pose an immediate danger to the community or any residential structures."

After three days of intermittent work to extinguish the fire, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation responded to help Sunday and provided two brush trucks.
High winds reignited the fire on Sunday evening and and it spread, according to officials. On Monday, crews returned with assistance from the Norwood, Randolph, and Sharon Fire Departments.

The fire was knocked down Tuesday, with "a few localized hotspots still smoldering," officials said. The Plymouth County Control Fire Task Force provided mutual aid with six brush trucks and two tankers to keep the grounds wet and prevent re-ignition Tuesday morning, and The National Guard dropped water via helicopter to keep the area wet Tuesday afternoon.
As of Wednesday, the Canton Fire Department is continuing to keep smoldering grounds wet to prevent spread.
"I want to thank our mutual aid partners and dedicated team for working tirelessly to put out this large-scale fire," Chief Wendell Robery said. "I urge residents to dispose of smoking materials properly and never to leave any fire unattended."
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation by the Canton Fire Department and Canton Police Department, according to officials.
