240 Tons of Debris Removed from the Harbor

The Boston Harbor Association launched this year's harbor cleanup, just in time for the swimming and boating season.

Last week The Boston Harbor Association (TBHA), in partnership with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, Massport, the City of Boston, and Eastern Salt Company, kicked off the 2011 Boston Harbor Marine Debris Removal Program.

The program has successfully helped to maintain a clean Boston Harbor for a number of swimming seasons. For the past 11 summers, more than 240 tons of debris have been removed from Boston Harbor and its tributaries by TBHA’s contractor, Boston Line & Service Company, with more than 20 percent of the collected materials recycled, according to a press release from the harbor association.

The Boston Harbor Marine Debris Cleanup program is designed to make Boston Harbor and its tributaries safer for swimmers, boaters, and marine life, and to improve Boston Harbor for navigation.
