5 Things: Charlestown Preservation Society Workshop

Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on April 25 in Charlestown.

1. Warming up: The morning will be mostly cloudy, gradually clearing, with a high near 65 degrees and a low around 41, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Historic markers workshop: The Charlestown Preservation Society is accepting applications from Charlestown property owners interested in obtaining a bronze marker for local buildings that are more than 100 years old and meet other requirements. Applications can be found at charlestownpreservation.org and are due by Aug. 1. Get help finding required documentation during a hands-on workshop today from 5:45-7:45 p.m. at the Charlestown Branch Library (179 Main St.). Bring a current photo of the building and any documentation you might have.

3. Food pantry fundraiser: Support the Harvest on Vine food pantry at a fundraiser tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus (545 Medford St.). The event will feature Karson Tager of Karson and Kennedy on Mix 104.1, with comedy by Tony V., DJ Jackie Kelly, catered food, raffle prizes and auction items. Tickets cost $30 each and are available at the St. Mary-St. Catherine of Siena Parish Center and Social Ministry Office.

4. Aquarium lecture: The New England Aquarium (1 Central Wharf) will host a free lecture and book signing today at 7 p.m. Dr. Rafe Sagarin of the Institute of the Environment at University of Arizona will discuss his book, “Learning from the Octopus: Nature’s Secrets for Thriving in an Uncertain World.” This event is open to the public and is part of the Aquarium’s free lecture series. Events will be held in the Aquarium's Harborside Learning Lab.

5. Free parking: To help Boylston Street businesses, Boston Mayor Tom Menino is offering free meter parking in all of the Back Bay this week through Sunday, April 28.
