5 Things: Dennis Lehane Talk, Skin Cancer Screening

Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on May 14 in Charlestown.

1. Sunny: Today will be sunny with a high near 61 degrees and a low around 43, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Author talk: Dennis Lehane, a Boston native and author of such books as “Gone Baby Gone,” “Shutter Island” and “Mystic River,” will be speaking at the South End Library (685 Tremont St.) tonight at 6:30 p.m. Lehane most recently published “Live by Night,” in 2012.

3. Members needed: Following the completion of a Charlestown community health assessment, a new Charlestown community health leadership council is being formed. The council will work to further develop health priorities in Charlestown. Nomination papers will be accepted throughout the summer. Learn more: http://patch.com/A-4jtT.

4. Scholarships available: The deadline to apply for Charlestown Against Drugs’ annual Peter Looney Scholarships is June 1. Application materials are available at the Charlestown Branch Library (179 Main St.) and at The Cooperative Bank (201 Main St.). Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to one student entering college and one student attending a private high school.

5. Free skin cancer screenings: Massachusetts Eye and Ear physicians Dr. Jessica Fewkes and Dr. Oon Tan will provide free skin cancer screenings tonight from 3-6 p.m. in the Carolyn and Peter Lynch Center for Reconstructive and Laser Surgery on the ninth floor at Mass. Eye and Ear (243 Charles St.). This screening is for those who do not have a dermatologist.
