Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on May 6 in Charlestown.

1. Sunny: Today will be sunny with a high near 66 degrees and a low around 50, according to the National Weather Service.
2. Coffee talk: Rep. Eugene O’Flaherty holds office hours every first and third Monday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon at Zume's Coffee House (223 Main St.).
3. Book discussion: Read “The Dante Club”? Drop by the Charlestown Branch Library (179 Main St.) tonight at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion of the book.

4. Party on the Pier: Home Away Boston, a new nonprofit that provides comfortable housing, a caring community and support services close to the hospital and free of charge to families with critically ill children, will host its first “Party on the Pier” fundraiser on Thursday, May 9. The event will take place from 6-9 p.m. at the Marriot Tudor Wharf in Charlestown and will include a cocktail reception catered by the award-winning caterer East Meets West and a live auction. 5. Writing help: Are you a writer looking to finish your children's book project? The Associates of the Boston Public Library is now seeking applications for their 10th annual Children's Writer-in-Residence fellowship, which provides an author with a room to work at in the Central Library in Copley Square and a $20,000 stipend. The residency will run from October through June. Learn more and apply at writer-in-residence.org. Applications are due on Friday, May 24.
