5 Things: RIF Volunteers Needed, Writers Deadline
Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on May 24 in Charlestown.

1. More showers: Expect showers and possible thunderstorms all afternoon and into the evening, with patchy fog before noon, according to the National Weather Service. High: 69, Low: 52. Memorial Day weekend forecast: Showers are likely both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the upper 50s and lows around 46 degrees. Memorial Day should be mostly sunny with a high near 66 and a low around 50.
2. Volunteers needed: Local residents can help support children's literacy in Charlestown by volunteering at the next Reading is Fundamental event on Thursday, May 30, between 3:30 and 6 p.m at the Charlestown Branch Library. Email children's librarian Laura Miller at lmiller@bpl.org if you can help. The May 30 event will feature a performance by musician Jay Mankita
3. Help for writers: Today is the deadline to apply for the Associates of the Boston Public Library’s 10th annual Children's Writer-in-Residence competition, a program that provides an emerging children's writer with the financial support and quiet space needed to complete a literary work within a nine-month period. 4. Yard sale signup: Charlestown nonprofit Trinity Recovery for Women’s townwide yard sale has been rescheduled for June 1, which means there is more time to register your sale. For a $15 tax-deductible donation, your yard or sidewalk sale will be listed on a brochure that will be distributed around town. You keep all proceeds from your own yard sale. To register, print and fill out the form on the Trinity website. Deadline to sign up is May 28.
5. Memorial Day concert: Boston will welcome a new tradition this Memorial Day, with a free outdoor concert at Christopher Columbus Park (110 Atlantic Ave.) in the North End. “Remembrance 2013: A Musical Tribute to Our Heroes” will feature the Metropolitan Wind Symphony and the Boston City Singers and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and to use public transportation (the MBTA will operate on a Sunday schedule that day).
