Boston City Golf Course Permits Now Available

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department has announced that a limited number of 2013 season permits are now available for the City of Boston’s two municipal golf courses—the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park and the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park.

As a season permit holder, golfers are entitled to advance tee time preference, free greens fees, and access to two of the region’s finest golf courses.  The Parks Department offers resident, non-resident, senior, and junior permits with a limit of 250 permits issued at each course on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

Boston’s golfers have a direct link to the City of Boston’s two municipal courses at the websitewww.cityofbostongolf.com which provides pricing and a downloadable application for the season permit.  Both courses are owned and operated by the City of Boston through the Fund for Parks and Recreation and feature full pro shops, concessions, cart rentals, and lessons for all ages. Founded in 1938, the 18-hole Donald Ross-designed George Wright Golf Course is a hidden gem in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. The course is open seven days a week through November. This par 70 layout measures 6,440 yards from the back tees and is a challenge to golfers of any level. 

The second-oldest public golf course in America, the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park measures 5,961 yards from the blue tees.  Part of the historic Emerald Necklace, the golf course offers a pleasant inner-city golfing experience only minutes from downtown Boston and is open year-round, weather permitting. 

Last year, the nationally-recognized George Wright Golf Course was chosen for two major events: the local qualifying round for the 2012 U.S. Golf Association Amateur Public Links Championship, and the 2012 Massachusetts Golf Association Amateur Public Links Championship.

The George Wright was recognized in 2011 as “Best Public Golf Course” by Boston Magazine in its 38th annual “Best of Boston” awards issue.  The magazine noted that the George Wright offers “a fun, fair test with lots of elevation changes, and there might not be finer back-to-back holes in the state than the 9th and 10th.” 

More recognition came in the fall of 2011 from Golfweek which included the George Wright in its list of the “10 Best Courses You Can Play In Massachusetts.”  Golf Digest named the William J. Devine Golf Course as one of their “Best Places to Play” three years in a row.
