JROTC Cadets Honored at Flag Day Ceremony

Every year, normally on June 14, (Flag Day), there is a special ceremony conducted at the Charlestown YMCA’s Constitution Inn.

Each of the Boston public high schools that have a JROTC unit selects the top senior graduating that year. That cadet and his or her parents are invited to attend the Annual JROTC Award of Excellence Luncheon at the Charlestown YMCA’s Constitution Inn. In a formal ceremony, each cadet receives an award of $500.

Additionally, each cadet submits a 500-word or less essay entitled “The Bill of Rights and My Responsibilities," describing what this means to them as U.S. citizens.  The JROTC instructor will forward it with an endorsement citing the cadet’s accomplishments.

This information will be provided to the Greater Boston Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars and the cadet with the best overall record and essay will be selected to receive the Captain Paul Danforth USN award of $500.  The winner of this award will be announced at the luncheon.

On Sunday, June 16 this group of outstanding cadets formed a special cadre and led all Boston Public Schools JROTC units marching in the Battle of Bunker Hill Day Parade.

The recipient of the Danforth Award was designated as the Cadet in Charge (CinC) of this cadre. A special banner was carried by members of the CinC’s high school JROTC unit.  The banner read,
