Big News About Bikes Expected from City Hall Today

Mayor Menino and Boston Bikes will make an announcement this afternoon at City Hall Plaza -- and they're giving away free lunch to anyone who shows up on a bike.

Today is Thursday, April 21. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. There's big news bubbling up today from Boston Bikes, the city's official bike department. They'll be hosting a press event with the mayor from 1:30-2 p.m at City Hall Plaza. Why go? They'll be giving free burritos (from Boloco) out to anyone who shows up with their bike. You'll get to hear the announcement while you're downing your free lunch. The email I got from Nicole Freedman, the city's bike czar, also promises live music. Will the announcement have anything to do with bike lanes in Charlestown? Probably not. But stay tuned, because on May 2, there will be a local meeting on the proposed bike lanes that …could be coming back … to the town.

2. Another the tax deadline has passed. Want to know what our leaders are using all your hard-earned dollars for? Courtesy of U.S. Rep. Mike Capuano's office, here's a handy "Federal tax receipt" calculator from the White House. Plug in your data and see a breakdown of what those tax dollars buy. (Hint: a lot of national defense.)

3. Today's Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday. Which means Lent is over! To mark the holy day in Christian tradition, Saint Mary-Saint Catherine of Siena Parish is hosting an 8 a.m. prayer service today. There's also a Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7:30 p.m.

4. Those public meetings over the future of Boston Public Library services are still going strong, more than a year into the so-called Compass program. Tonight's meeting -- which runs from 6 to 7 p.m. at the West End Branch -- seems to be an overview of all the meetings the library has hosted so far, collecting input from residents about future services at the library. If you're curious but don't want to attend the meeting, on what's been happening.
