The “Small Business of the Year Award” is honored to small businesses with gross revenues of more than $1 million “who display strong financial performance, achievement in management, workplace excellence, product innovation and community or social responsibility,” according to Monday’s announcement.

Boston Organics was noted for its exemplary business model; the company provides home- and office-grocery delivery.

Moreover, the company was noted for promoting access to healthy foods and having partnered directly with farms, bakeries, dairies and healthy food suppliers. As a result, the company is able to deliver organic groceries to its customers in and around the Boston area.

“Since we started 12 years ago, a major focus has been on building a more healthy and resilient food system,” Boston Organics founder and president Jeff Barry said at the event. “One of the most innovative strategies that’s helped us to do this has been the transparency in our network of organic growers and producers. We’ve always believed that being accountable and deliberate about where we source our food has been instrumental in our growth.”

The company became a “certified B corporation” last year, a move that legally confirmed their commitment to consider all stakeholders, including the environment, when making business decisions.
