Boston Ranked Safe for Pedestrians

A new study puts Boston at the bottom of a list of the most dangerous cities for people on foot.

Today is Thursday, May 26. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. Boston is the place to be if you're a pedestrian, so says a new study by Transportation for America, an organization that ranked the city as the least dangerous place for people on foot. The study indicates that about 5 percent of Boston residents walk to work -- also that the annual fatality rate is 1.1 (per 100,000 people). I'm guessing the authors of this report have never crossed the Charlestown Bridge on a windy, rainy day. Want to read more about the study? You can check out a report from the local CBS affiliate or go directly to the source, here.

2. What would happen to Boston if there were an alien invasion that obliterated most of the Earth's population? You can find out next month when Falling Skies, a new TV show, airs next month on TNT. The show is set in Massachusetts after aliens attack the planet -- and a state militia forms to protect and mobilize the local survivors. The blog Hollywood East reports the show was not, in fact, filmed here, but will, in fact, feature bad Boston accents and standard New England cliches. You can watch the trailer on the TNT web site. It looks kind of good, if you like sci-fi. Oh, and the show was co-conceived by Steven Spielberg.

3. Gentle reminder: A is taking place tonight at Grasshopper Cafe from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $25 -- it'll get you food, drinks and entry into a raffle.

4. A fashion art show featuring clothing and sketches by students at five Boston colleges will go on display tonight at City Hall, Mayor Menino announced. The show, entitled "New Boston: Focus on Fashion," is part of the Cultural Awareness Series begun in 2004 to promote appreciation for Boston's diversity. "Boston has long been known as the Athens of America," Menino said in a release. "This exhibition is a perfect example how youth from our various academic institutions continue to influence the world around them.”

5. At last, consecutive days of spring. Today's forecast: Some clouds, some sun. High of 76.
