Can You Lend a Hand for a Spring Cleaning at Doherty Park?

Plus, Superintendent Carol Johnson invites parents to help Boston Public Schools improve the city's choice program.

Today is Friday (!), April 15. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. It’s time for some spring cleaning – in Doherty Park. This weekend the Friends of Doherty Park are getting together to pick up the debris from a long winter and spruce it up for spring. The Friends of Doherty Park, by the way, meet every third Monday at 6 p.m. at Hawk Design on Main Street. The group is looking for volunteers who will take an active interest in making improvements to the park, which was originally designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. For details on the cleanup or the Friends group, contact Mary Fahey at maryfahey927@comcast.net.

2. The city’s School Committee is taking up school choice … again. Two years ago the School Committee was on its way to tackling the issue, but public outcry effectively squashed the conversation. At this week’s committee meeting, Superintendent Carol Johnson announced plans to explore school choice and invited city parents to participate in the process. If you’re interested in the future of the city’s choice process, send an email to choice@bostonpublicschools.org. 3. Hopefully the rain in the forecast Sunday won’t come. Because it would be a damp row across Boston Harbor for the actors who will lead a dramatic recreation of Paul Revere’s historic row from the North End to Charlestown early Sunday evening. Think about it: 236 years ago Paul Revere paddled across the harbor, got on his horse in Charlestown and began his famous midnight ride to Lexington. The next day the Revolutionary War began. Sunday’s event is free and open to the public. For details on the event, click .

4. Hey, there’s a . Gloria Asselta-Sullivan’s paintings are on the walls now through May. I’ve got to stop by and get a look for myself.
